KASHMIR a nuclear flashpoint
never was and will never be part of India - Intifada

HISTORICAL FACTUALITY

"In his letter of acceptance of instrument of accession dated October 28, 1947 addressed 'to the last Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh, Lord Mountbatten Governor General, clearly laid down that "in the case of any state where the issue of accession has been subject of dispute the question of accession should be decided in accordance with the wishes of the people of state. This assurance has not been fulfilled and therefore the issue remains open till today. No individual, however eminent, and no political party, could be permitted to usurp the sovereign right of self-determination of the people of Kashmir."

KASHMIR IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Historically Kashmir refers to an area of 86,024 square miles of the north-western region of the Indian sub-continent. It refers to the area that includes the Indian occupied region of Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Ladakh, the Pakistani occupied regions are northern areas and Azad Kashmir and Chinese occupied region is referred to as Aksai Chin gifted away by the Government of Pakistan.

In the 14th century, Islam was the dominant religion in Kashmir and leading the Sufi-Islamic way of life, Muslims and Hindus of Kashmir lived in relative harmony. Rinchen Shah from Tibet attacked and killed the last Hindu King Ram Chand and married his daughter Kuta Rani. Famous Sufi Saint Bulbul Shah (Abdul Rahman) was able to persuade the king of the time Rinchan Shah, later this prince of Kashgar Ladakh took the name of Saddaruddin Shah, through his intellectual power to adopt Islamic way of life and the foundation of Sufiana composite culture was laid when Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists co-existed in the atmosphere of love and brotherhood. Another spiritual Saint, Mir Saeed Ali Hamdani reverently known as Shah Hamdan, through his spititual powers influenced people to heed the call of Islam and due to the nobility in his person, a huge majority accepted Islam. Mir Syed Ali Hamadani came to Kashmir in 1372 and then again in 1379 and 1384 during the reign of Sultan Qutubbuddin. He and his 700 followers (desciples) gave the call of Islam which was accepted by a majority of Hindus and Budhists.

Kashmir is famous for its exquisite handicrafts like woollen and silk carpets, felt Numdha rugs, Chain stitch rugs, pin point tapestry, crewel drapery and huge lot of other items......It is a treat for animal lovers and bird watchers to visit Kashmir and apart from the local habitat, animals and birds, you get to watch vareity of migratory birds ..The Site

This heaven on earth is in flames; its people, history, culture and beauty are being systematically destroyed, the world community, unfortunately is helplessly watching to see the generations wiped out and has done very little so far to help bring an end to the ordeal of Kashmir.

Kashmiris by nature are non-violent, through centuries; they have lived peacefully in spite of the political intrigues and subjugation by outside forces and subjecting the whole population to torture, inhuman treatment and humiliation.

About 16 million people live in occupied Kashmir, of which around 70% are Muslims. The rest include Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and a small minority of Christians. Hindus live mostly in the south and around the city of Jammu. To the east is the Ladakh region, where the majority of the people are Buddhists and of Tibetan origin. Ladakh includes a vast area inhabited by the Muslim majority

Most of the Kashmiri people work on farms. Others are engaged in small cottage industries making shawls, rugs and carpets. Kashmir is well known for its wool and, in particular, its shawls, carpets and silk products. Much of the farmland is under intense cultivation, producing corn, wheat, rice and saffron amongst other crops. Fruit and nuts are also produced in quantities including pears, apples, walnuts, cherries, apricot and almonds etc.

HISTORICAL LALCHOWK

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India´s first Prime Minister, addressing people of Kashmir in capital city Srinagar and said  we have not come to stay. Nehru was emotionally blackmailed and exploited by his fellow Pandits and the elite group of Pandits managed to brain-wash him and made him commit blunders one after the other vis a vis Kashmir.

A huge majority of people in India and Pakistan are peace loving and feel that animosity and hatred, created by religious zealots on both sides in general and politicians to stay in power in particular, caused lot of damage to a common man.  The saner elements on both sides are busy making an effort to bring two people together to create an atmosphere of friendly and brotherly relations and all realise that Kashmir problem has been hanging in balance for a long time and needs to be resolved as per the wishes of the people of Kashmir.  The prevailing situation is a direct result of two nuclear countries fighting wars and people of Kashmir as such have had no role to play to complicate the situation.

India says Pakistan is an aggressor, and in October 1947 pushed Pathan tribal of North-West Frontier Province into Kashmir led by a Kashmiri Major Khurshid Anwar, resident of Azad kashmir, of erstwhile British Indian Army, to occupy Kashmir by force. India and Pakistan fought three full scale wars [India fought fourth war with China in 1962].  In October, 1947, due to Pathan invasion managed to occupy 40% of Kashmir State. Fierce battles were fought in September 1965 at Chamb, Jurian, Akhnoor with no positive results for either side.  Thereafter, in December, 1971, Pakistan lost the Eastern Wing [East-Pakistan] and the independent nation of Bangladesh was created.

India maintains that it received a call from the people of 'East-Pakistan' to help them from Pakistan army who they said were committing atrocities on the local population.  India, thus, waged a war on Pakistan and liberated East-Pakistan to become an independent nation of Bangladesh.  After 9/11 Pakistan on the back foot is busy trying to save the country from internal and external intrigues, especially dealing with terrorism. In a nutshell, Pakistan has been a loser all along and like India in an identical fashion treated Kashmiris politically in the area held by it ruling that part through their agents and puppet Governments installed from Islamabad.  There has been no political or armed resistance against Islamabad and therefore no violence or uprising against Pakistan is on record.

GANDHI AND KASHMIR

As leader of National Conference, Sheikh Abdullah in May 1946, launched a new slogan of Quit Kashmir that gave a rejuvenated dimensions to the movement. Mahatma Gandhi visited Kashmir on 3rd August, 1947, met Maharaja to persuade him to join India. He met Sheikh’s wife as Abdullah was in Bhadrwah jail and agreeing to drop the demand of Quit Kashmir. Sheikh was released and shifted to Badami Bagh Cantonment area. On his release, a famous peace campaigner and an old Labour minister in the Atlee government Philip Noel Baker objected and showed concerns about Sheikh’s release saying the latter was acting on Indian Agenda and his release would destroy the very political fabric of Kashmir.

The armed forces in both India and Pakistan at the time of conflict in 1947-48 were still led by British officers and the critical defense committee of the Indian cabinet was presided over by none other than Mountbatten. British generals in India and Pakistan maintained informal channels of communication on Kashmir developments, according to the author. General Douglas Gracey’s telegram of 24 October finds a place in every account of the history of Kashmir, less well known is the fact that he had informed Indian’ commander-in-chief Gen Lockhart about preparations for the invasion even before October 24. In the early stages of the conflict, counseled by the supreme commander for India and Pakistan, Field Marshal Auchinlek, Indian commander-in-chief Gen Lockhart refrained from sending supplies requested by Maharaja Hari Singh. He also withheld from the government intelligence received from his Pakistani counterparts about impending infiltration by tribesmen.

CHINA

Allama Iqbal a visionary, philosopher and poet of the east predicted about the nation awakened to start a new struggle under the chairmanship of Mao Tse Tung, a people infested with widespread drug addiction, laziness, enslaved by imperialist powers, so poverty stricken that a handful grain of rice would be enough to trade their boys and girls to force them into prostitution. The transformation by laying the foundation in the fields of culture, technology and economy did cost, as is believed, huge number of deaths but in the end led the country to become one of the major world powers. Allama´s futuristic view of this erstwhile sedated nation is expressed in his couplet:

Chairman Mao is quoted to be neutral as far as Kashmir imbroglio is concerned, at least it could be a factual position before or during the 'hindi chini bhai bhai (brotherly) affair' but after 1962 war won decisively by China, the whole political scenario changed dramatically. India after winning the war in 1971 with Pakistan creating a sovereign nation of Bangladesh disturbed the balance of power in the sub-continent, China befriending Pakistan supported it to become nuclear and succeeded in their plan to keep India busy and entangled with Pakistan leaving no time for India to worry about China. China busy building up their own economy and military might were uninterrupted to gain time to evolve a strategy to deal with the games played by big powers on the international level.

The growing American influence in the area making headway through Iraq, Afghanistan and new convenient relationship with India is worrisome for China and Pakistan. Pakistan’s huge economic and domestic political turmoil gives it no option other than being “with us” rather than “against us”. American plans, understood by some quarters in Pakistan and China, to stay in Afghanistan for unspecified period has multiple objectives:

  • At the outset to keep nuclear Pakistan under check as this might have repercussions in future for Pakistan to assume leadership of the Muslim world and become more powerful using the support and money thus provided by rich Islamic nations. To keep Pakistan under continuous pressure could create a fragmented Pakistan and or become a failed state that might force it to give up its nuclear program.

  • A nuclear Pakistan is an impediment for the fulfillment of individual agendas of nexus of troika powers America, Israel and India.

  • Most importantly in order to maintain the only super power status it is imperative to keep a vigil on recently defeated Soviet Union and emerging new super power China.

  • This all allows control on economic resources of the world and to keep the state of Israel safe as Mahathir Muhammed said Israel is ruling the world by proxy.

Apart from the areas occupied by India and Pakistan, China also has its share by occupying Aksai Chin and receiving Trans Korakaram Tract as a gift, a goodwill gesture from Pakistan for the services rendered. The countries involved use Kashmir to score their political points be it Pakistan's struggle to survive or India's meddling in Tibet affairs or China in retaliation claiming Arunachal Pradesh that India claims is hers. A new diplomatic tussle renewed due to issuing of visas on a separate sheet of paper to visitors from Indian occupied Kashmir or Arunachal Pradesh. China reportedly says Kashmir is a separate country.

CREDIBILITY OF "INCREDIBLE INDIA"

One morning of Dec-Jan 1990, notorious Indian CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) knock at the door of Abdul Ahad Bhat of Batmaloo, Srinagarand demand the TV set to watch their favourite program Ramayana. The lady of the house opens the door to find uniformed armed infantry men staring at her with the demand and the next minute she collapses and is rushed by her relations to the hospital to be declared dead. In Kashmir incredible India does such miracles on daily basis.

THE KILLING FIELDS

Over one million trigger happy armed men in uniform, who do not understand the language, culture, religion, ethos and behaviour, pounce on local population with vengeance and a mindset to eliminate the populace to occupy this rich paradise belonging to the poor inhabitants. It is amazing to find the "GOOD PEOPLE" of the world turning a blind eye to these atrocities committed with impunity. UN can see what happens in Syria, Lybia or Iran but when it comes to Kashmir they look the other way and one wonders why?

More than one hundred thousand men, women and children killed in the last twenty seven years. An independent Kashmir can be a bridge and instrumental between two hostile nuclear nations. Censorship imposed in "Indian democracy" conveniently and with suitability worsens the situations. Indian army makes sure to confine populace behind closed doors as millions on the roads create an embarrassing situation and international community is inclined to ask few questions. THE MESSAGE LOUD & CLEAR

STONES AND BRICKS (Kanijung)

Out of the hundreds of recorded situations, Hindu fundamentalist extremist Organizations like Sang Parivar, Bajrang Dal, Hindu Mahasabha, Jana Sangh of Jammu notoriety and out of many more the notable Shiv Sena of Bombay, busy with ethnic cleansing and finishing the Muslim community economically, like in Jammu, Ajmeer, Aligarah, Jabalpur, Salempur, Meerut, Thana-Bhiwindi in Bombay, Jaipur, Moradabad, Calcutta, Madras, Kerala and a special mention of butcher Narendra Modi of Gujarat cannot be ignored, and finally the Babri Mosque, a tip of the ice-berg.

India must take a cue from Pakistan to crush these above mentioned Hindu fundamentalist terrorist organisations to allow peace and harmony to prevail, so that all people, irrespective of colour, creed or religious background, live in an atmosphere of live and let live brotherly conditions. After all India claims to be the largest democratic secular country of the world and to maintain the image is vitally important.  The saner elements in India do realise that it is practically not possible to wipe out the entire population of over three hundred million Muslims, Christians in the North-East or elsewhere in India or Sikhs to carve out a Hindu State.

Days before Pathan tribal invasion, India had already managed to station Maharaja Patiala´s elite force at Srinagar Airport to guard it from any aggression. The air-lifted Indian 1 Sikh on 26th October, 1947 was surprised to see the job already done, a very pleasant welcome situation. The purport ´Instrument of Accession´ did not exist anywhere before above mentioned Pathan aggression. Kashmiris have been fighting Indian Army right from the day when Sheikh Abdullah on 9th of August 1953 was removed as Prime Minister of Kashmir, charged with sedition and treason, imprisoned for eleven years in Kud jail near Jammu and later externed to South Indian city of Kodaikanal, finally shifted to Kotla lane in Delhi.  It started off with stones and brickes filling their own graveyards and in 1989 the armed uprising became altogether a different story.

Maharaja Sir Hari Singh supported by his Prime Minister Ram Chand Kak with all determined intent to maintain the status quo of sovereign independent status of Kashmir. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, a master politician, managed to put Lord Mountbatten on his side; first by befriending Lady Edwina Mountbatten and then successfully roping in Sheikh Abdullah to convince Lord Mountbatten that Sheikh was on their side and was against Muslim Pakistan.  Sheikh, just released from Maharajas prison, was lodged at Nehrus Delhi residence at 17 York road and finding himself in the company of Lord Mountbatten, Sardar Baldev Singh, V.P.Menon, Dwarkanath Kachru, Mehr Chand Mahajan, the current Prime Minister of Sir Hari Singh (a trusted man of Pandit Nehru and one of the members of Boundary Commission headed by Radclliffe to decide the fate of Gurdaspur) got overwhelmed and could not understand that the rug was being pulled from under his feet. He did realize it soon when he was removed from office and jailed but it was too late because by then V.P.Menon and Mehr Chand Mahajan had stage managed the drama to get the purport accession document signed from Maharaja.

Khokh

History is replete with atrocities committed on Kashmiris who have been targeted by invading forces with the main aim to indulge in loot and plunder. One of this ruthless barbarian tribe Khokh or Jotha came through Korakaram, Himalayas route and subjected the local population to torture and humiliation. Kashmiris do remember Khokh as even today a mother trying to put her child to sleep or wanting the child to be quiet and behave, would warn the child that Khokh are approaching and this would work.

Durranis of Afghanistan(1750 - 1819)

These invading rulers also found defenseless people of the valley as soft targets and because of these harsh realities people developed a habit of being tolerant, forbearing and receptive to inhuman treatment. Durranis rule has been another worst experience of people of the valley.

SHABNAM QAYOOM

kis ka lahu hai kaun mara

The book kis ka lahu hai kaun mara (Whose blood is this and who died?) may not be a masterpiece of Urdu literature and the story line characters Reshma, Ashok, Mahmood or Muzfari, may lose flavour for future generations to connect these to understand author´s viewpoint. However, a brilliant piece of an endeavour giving factual historical documentation analysing in an elaborate fashion to tell the tale of this rich paradise belonging to very unfortunate and poor people. Shabnam Qayoom displays his extrovert demeanour and calls spade a spade to tell a story that gives a healing touch to bruised hearts, psyche and minds as the unfolded situation is translated painstakingly into words considered to be a representation of the feelings of an average Kashmiri. However, Kashmir´s political leadership and a large majority of people dispute some of the historical events recorded in the author´s book as unauthentic.
